Episodes highlighting various archaeological periods of the Hernád Valley’s “cradle of life”, five additional excavation stories are presented from the southern shore of Lake Balaton, Győr and Nyergesújfalu, showcasing finds and stories from the Prehistoric, Roman and Migration Periods as well as the Middle Ages. Visitors can also take a peek into the conservators’ workshop, where most excavated finds are brought to be “reborn” so that each item can provide more information about its historical context and former owners. Although the excavations carried out in the Hernád Valley, Győr, Balatonszentgyörgy and Nyergesújfalu are merely blips on the greater archaeological map of the Carpathian Basin, they raise awareness of the fact that also the less compelling elements of the archaeological cultural heritage are often endangered and require protection, care, and proper excavation work. The finds displayed in this exhibition hold more than regional significance and can be interpreted in a greater European or even Eurasian context. Piece by piece, the results of scientific research contribute to creating a complete picture of our ancestors, as well as shaping our national identity.
